International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action 2019
To commemorate the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, the ASEAN Regional Mine Action Center (ARMAC), with funding support from the Government of Norway, the Royal Thai Government, the Government of Ireland, and the Clearing for Results Project, hosted a two-day event focused on “Raising Mine/Explosive Remnants of War (ERW) Awareness for Peace, Stability and Resilience in ASEAN through Youth Participation”, held 3-4 April 2019 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The event included a seminar on 4 April with registration open to general participants and students, held at the Cambodia-Korea Cooperation Center (CKCC), Royal University of Phnom Penh.
Aims
The commemoration aimed to enhance awareness on the dangers of mines/ERW through a youth focused event involving ASEAN university students and mine action experts. The event included a study tour and demonstration of mine action related activities at NPMEC’s Training School for Multinational Peacekeeping Forces and a visit to the Vocational Training Center for Persons with Disabilities coordinated by CMAA, as well as seminar discussing current issues in mine action. Through the event ARMAC and its partners hope to:
- Promote the commemoration of the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action as a global effort to address the issue of mines/ERW
- Share basic knowledge with the ASEAN university students on the effects of mines/ERW and efforts to address them
- Raise awareness on dangers of mines/ERW for affected communities, particularly among youth
The ASEAN students that submitted the best applications have received a full sponsorship to attend the event in Phnom Penh. The selection process was very competitive and we thank all students for their submissions.
The mine awareness day event for 2019 has concluded. Please follow ARMAC’s Facebook and Twitter to receive information about future events.
